Leah was first to go through with her side of the bargain. As soon as she decided to leave Chris, his presence became so unbearable to her that she couldnât understand how sheâd stayed with him for four whole months. The problem was, she had no idea how to leave someone. For a fortnight or so, she hoped that her obvious aversion to him might prompt Chris to ask her what was wrong. But Chris didnât seem to mind her froideur. No, scratch that â he didnât even notice it. Leah began to feel that no matter how badly she behaved, Chris would remain his gallant, good-humoured self. She had an unsettling idea of herself as a storybook ghost, translucent and insubstantial, her hand passing pathetically through any object she tried to hold on to.
Halfway through January he rang to tell her he wanted to make a reservation for the two of them at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Clerkenwell. Leah was in her bedroom, folding laundry on the futon. She took the phone over to the window and answered the call with her forehead pressed against the glass.
âWhat do you reckon? Itâs meant to be really cool, they do all sorts of weird bits like the nose and the trotters.â Chris was developing a taste for gourmet dining. If Leah objected to the expense, he would reply that it was his money and this was how he wanted to spend it. Then he would make a quip about how bad the food was going to be in Afghanistan. âIâm filling up on the good stuff while I can,â he would say. This was unanswerable, so Leah found herself suffering overpriced, cream-and-butter-heavy meals whenever Chris came to London. After two of these dinners she had secretly made herself throw up, something she had promised herself and her parents and her childhood GP that she would never do again.
Now, standing at the window, it was the thought of this restaurant as much as the thought of Chris that emboldened her to say, âActually, I donât think I want to.â
âWhat, youâd rather just have a quiet one? Thatâs okay, we can go on Sunday instead, maybe lunchtime?â
âI mean I donât want to go at all.â
âOh. Right, okay,â said Chris. âSo ⦠what do you want to do?â
The words were already there; sheâd played them in her mind a thousand times. It was just like diving into an outdoor swimming pool: you focused on the mechanism of the dive, not on how cold the water was going to be. One little sentence, a single articulated exhalation â that was all she had to doâ
âI donât think this is really working for me any more.â
âWhat? Sorry, I didnât catch that â youâre breaking up â my receptionâs a bit dodgeââ
Trembling now, she said it again. This time he heard her.
âOh. Right. I see. Right.â There was a short spate of muffled coughing. âI see,â he said again.
âSorry,â said Leah. She knew she should say something more than just âsorryâ, but she couldnât think what.
